The Department of Labour’s Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Directorate within the Inspection and Enforcement Services Branch will be hosting a workshop on 22 June 2018 at Lethabo Power Station (Vereeniging). The purpose of the workshop is to provide interpretation and guidance on the Lift, Escalator and Passenger Conveyor Regulations to the following stakeholders:
· Suppliers
· Contractors
· Maintenance Providers
· Users
· Inspection Service Providers
· Inspectors
· Facility managers from various government department
· Industry bodies (Associations)
The workshop will be running under the theme “How safe is the transportation of people and goods within South African buildings”.
These regulations apply to any person who has permanent lifts, escalator or passenger conveyor on his or her premises or any person who carries out work on lifts, escalators or passenger conveyors.
Topics to be discussed include:
· Transitional arrangements for goods hoists
· Possible Standards to be considered for inspection
· Impact of incorporation of SANS 50081 – 20 & 50
· Impact of Approved Inspection Authority (AIA) in the lifts, escalators or passenger conveyors. Industry and the draft proposed standards.
· Lift Inspector qualification and Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO) requirements
· New lifts and Passenger conveyors installations and the role of contractors
· Construction Industry Development Board requirements
· Way forward of the lifts, escalators and passenger conveyors industry.
The workshop will be addressed by the Department of Labour Chief Inspector: Occupational Health and Safety Mr. Tibor Szana; Senior Specialist: Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Mr Jacob Malatse; and Specialist: Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Mr Mohlakola Monyaki.
