The Honourable Minister of Public Works, Mr Thulas Nxesi at the inauguration of the CBEs 5th term Council on Wednesday 16 January 2019 expressed his Department’s expectations of the CBE, specifically that of transforming the South African Built Environment sector. During his address the CBE was reminded of its priority mandate to be the leader and driver of transformation in the built environment. These issues would be further interrogated at the CBE’s second annual Transformation Indaba, set for 7-8 February 2019 at the CSIR Conference Centre in Pretoria.
The Minster called for a renewed and sustainable approach to address the slow pace of transformation and working in silos so prevelant among sector stakeholders. To this effect the CBE will act as lead sector coordinator of the South African built environment, with a specific focus on building public / private sector partnerships while drawing on the active participation of the academic sphere of our country.

The need for the Seminar
In terms of ‘Structures 6(1)’, the Construction Regulations require a range of health and safety (H&S) interventions by designers. Furthermore, there is a need in South Africa for holistically educated clients, project managers, architects, engineers, interior designers, landscape architects, quantity surveyors, construction managers, and construction H&S consultants. Currently, most tertiary built environment programmes, particularly designer related, do not address construction H&S, and if so, then to a limited or cursory extent.
The Western Cape Chapter will be having a meeting on Thursday the 10th August 2017 from 16h00 to 18h30 at CPUT, Bellville campus (exact auditorium to be confirmed closer the time)
Topic to be discussed: Designing for construction health & safety.
Presenter: Anton Krause representing RAG Strategists and ACHASM.
Please RSVP before 28 July to accommodate seating, thanks.
The Annual ACHASM Summit took place in October this year. It was very well attended and, from all accounts, thoroughly enjoyed by all participants.
The wide range of topics meant that there was something of interest for all participants. A very big thank you to all of our guest speakers & to our main sponsor, PERI. without whom the 2 days could not have been as successful as what they were.
From discovering hidden talents (thank-you Louis for all your IT support!), to hearing about all of the latest happenings in our Guest Speakers' areas of expertise, the 2 days proved to be an invaluable learning experience.
ACHASM 'PRE-MORTEMS VERSUS POST-MORTEMS: ASSURING H&S THROUGHOUT A PROJECT’S STAGES VERSUS LEARNING BY ACCIDENT' SUMMIT,
WESTVILLE COUNTRY CLUB, DURBAN, 10 - 11 OCTOBER 2016
The theme was identified due to the increased media coverage afforded the construction industry in terms of ‘accidents’, in addition to the incidence of fatalities, notwithstanding the fact that ‘one fatality is one too many’.
The African Construction and Totally Concrete Expos are the definitive African educational and networking platform for insights on the latest developments and technologies associated with the cement, concrete and construction industry.
The interactive discussions focus on challenges and solutions of new developments and also identify new opportunities for the industry. International, high-level speakers will present their views through presentations, case studies and interactive panels.
